A video filmed on a Nanjing subway showing a young boy slapping and hitting his grandmother with a water bottle has gone viral online, racking up over 3,000 comments from netizens.
According to a Sina news report, the grandmother had just picked her grandson up from school and the two were on the way home when he flew into a fit rage and started aggressively hitting her with his thermos bottle. When she tried to grab the bottle from him, the boy became noticeably more irritated and slapped her then kicked her legs.
Netizens expressed disgust not only in the child’s actions, but placed blame on the parents (absent from the video) who many believe encourage this type of behavior by spoiling their (in most cases) only child. Here are a few comments we translated:
“What kind of parents would raise this type of child? It serves them right!”
“Spoiling is very common, especially from grandparents. Many young parents are very upset as they know it’s not good but they have no idea about how to fix it. I face a similar situation. When I try to teach my child, the older generation gets so irritated. What should I do?”
“No matter how busy the parents are, no matter how important their career is, I sincerely hope that they could spend more time teaching their child before their first day of school. You should never rely on older generation to teach the children nor school teachers to guide them.”
“80 percent chance that the parents weren’t good children themselves. They set bad examples for the kids little by little.”
“Loving does not mean spoiling. Elders love their offspring. The key is how to protect them and how to guide them.”
