It seems Taobao sweet vendors have taken after Harry Potter’s Weasley twins and are selling “joke medicine” that purports to treat a variety of ailments from “regret” to “loserdom.” They should probably also sell one for “gullibility” as apparently enough people are buying them for the China Food and Drug Administration to issue an official warning to consumers about this “Sino Snake Oil.” WSJ reports:
This week, the China Food and Drug Administration issued a notice telling consumers to steer clear of such items, which often come packaged in white bottles that wouldn’t look out of place in a pharmacy. In the notice, the government slammed such candies for “misleading consumers” and banned their sale.
Reached by phone Wednesday, one Shanghai-based Taobao vendor of so-called “regret medicine” said she was angered by the government’s dictum. The vendor, surnamed Hu, said she expects to lose thousands of yuan as she still has some 25,000 bottles of “regret medicine” on hand and more in her inventory.
“This is really unfair,” she said. “Nobody gave us any notice or tested [our product safety]. If they came here, I would definitely cooperate. But no one showed up.”
“They do not respect the consumers or us,” she said.
In its notice, the government in particular warned consumers to avoid “regret medicine,” “break-up medicine” and “forget past romance potion.”
