Former mining magnate Liu Han accepted responsibility and said he deserved his end in a Hubei province court after he was sentenced to death for heading a 36-member “mafia-style” gang accused of committing murder, fraud and extortion, among other crimes.
A South China Morning Post report cited two court witnesses who said that during a brief hearing in Xianning, Liu yelled “I’ve been framed” and “I’ve been wronged” to the court before guards dragged him off.
Liu’s younger brother, Liu Wei, was also sentenced to death yesterday, bringing to an end one of the highest-profile cases against a private businessman since Xi Jinping’s nation-wide campaign against graft began.
The pair is suspected to have ties with the family of Zhou Yongkang, formerly one of China’s most powerful politicians now reportedly being probed for corruption.
