Asia’s big, bad, laowai apples are at it again. They’re running off with local girls, they’re overstaying their visas and in a move that spits in the very face of Chinese laws and culture they are…yes, you guessed it. They are jaywalking.
No, but seriously. According to a Weibo post from a local news outlet, two laowai were caught jaywalking in Zhongshan Park on Friday and when stopped by police, of course tried to say they didn’t speak Chinese (a tactic sadly popular among locals and foreigners alike). Unfortunately for them, the police officer spoke English and the now desperate, the arrogant duo decided to try out the poorly-scripted “we’re both color blind” excuse. After refusing to back down the foreigners allegedly bust out fluent Chinese and Shanghainese to continue the heated argument, which won them a trip to the police station and subsequent “education”.
There are definite gaps in this story. If the foreigners could speak fluent Mandarin and Shanghainese, there’s no way they could have behaved like such idiots.
Either way, the Weibo post has sparked a wave of angry commentary, most of which bashes foreigners and praises the traffic police.
Here are some of our favorites:
“Haha, foreign hooligans!” user 5165464896557879O summed up succinctly.
“Don’t think that your big nose and blue eyes exempts you from Chinese laws and regulations. The days when foreigners lived outside Chinese jurisdiction are gone forever, traffic police are China’s glory!” said AleksimMaksim.
“Dashing” user Rumi-婕婕 wrote.
And Weibo user 浆糊小喇叭- puts the cherry on the cake with his eloquent and well-thought out comment: “actually most foreigners are despicable, otherwise they wouldn’t have had two world wars”.
Maybe just wait for the green light next time.
