Tourism officials in Nanzhao Country, Henan Province made waves on the internet when they pinned live butterflies to a model to celebrate their region’s biodiversity and draw ecotourists, because nothing helps promote nature like destroying it, right? Perhaps Sichuan officials can don panda pelts to draw visitors to the Wolong National Nature Reserve. Check out the ghoulish fashion display below.
The sight of the butterflies flapping frantically to escape while pinned to the dress reportedly made several kids cry, whereupon the parents took them away from the Bao Tianman Scenic Spot.
When confronted with criticism of the event being “barbaric,” spokesperson Ning Wang stated, “we wanted to encourage people’s love of insects and the natural world and to encourage them to protect our fellow creatures instead of catching and killing them so relentlessly.” Gasket. Blown.
The event was advertised as “a living butterfly fairy making an appearance that is sure to delight young and old.” You can’t make this stuff up.
