China punished 55 people for crimes including murder, rape, separatism and terrorism during a mass trial in a Xinjiang stadium today. This gathering was attended by 7,000 people and Communist Party officials from the Ili Prefecture, reports The Australian.
3 of the detainees were sentenced to death for murdering a family last year. After detaining 27 suspects, the police announced the arrests of another 38 at the actual trial.
According to Zeenews, the Ili’s deputy party chief stated that this event aimed at demonstrating China’s “resolute determination to crack down on the ‘three forces’ [separatism, extremism and terrorism] of violent terrorism” after the recent attacks in Urumqi, which left 39 people dead.
Beijing’s first measure of its official yearlong anti-terrorist operation was to beef up the security in the capital.
