Kai Ching estate in Kowloon Bay over the weekend became the scene of a tense armed standoff between Hong Kong police and local resident Li Tak-yan, who was just recently revealed to be the father of Liddy Li—a local model caught up in a sensational infidelity scandal that’s been making waves on the web.
At 11:00 on Saturday night, Li, a mainland immigrant from Hunan province, paced around the lobby of Lok Ching House where he lived; he tailed a neighbour who lived on the 21st floor into the lift and shot him three times, “execution style”, as he left the lift and approached his door, keys in hand. The victim, Liu Kai-chung, appeared to have been selected randomly. Li then returned to his own flat 11 floors below and holed himself inside.
By the time morning broke, police had evacuated the 10th floor and cordoned off the building. Lee appeared at his window and fired at the police below, who returned a single shot, and then stood perched on his window ledge with his gun to his head.
Members of the elite Special Duties Unit, informally known as the Flying Tigers, were deployed, scaling down the side of the building and lobbing stun grenades before swooping inside (their heroics inspired a Lego recreation that you can see here); but by the time they broke through, Li has already “swallowed the gun”, turning the trigger on himself and taking his own life.
Divorced and unemployed, Li had a well-earned reputation for aggressiveness against his neighbours. In a temporary housing estate in Yuen Long where he first lived after his business failed and his wife left him, Li attacked and injured a man next door with a meat cleaver. He received a one-year prison sentence for his crime, and upon his release moved into the tower near the old Kai Tak Airport. Psychologists said at the time that he had poor anger management abilities and dealt poorly with stress, but despite being lonely and volatile he was not mentally ill.
Police found two pistols in Li’s flat along with 43 rounds of ammunition, and they are currently working with Guangdong police to ascertain the origins of the weapons, as illegal firearms typically enter Hong Kong through the mainland.
In a surprise twist, it emerged today that Li’s 27-year-old daughter is none other than Liddy Li, local actress/model and the erstwhile mistress of renowned Hong Kong director Oxide Pang. Together with his twin brother Danny, the Pang Brothers were behind popular films such as the Infernal Affairs series and horror classic The Eye.
Pang’s marriage with Malaysian film star Angelica Lee had been very publicly hitting the rocks since his affair with Liddy was exposed by Apple Daily last week. Pang flew to the Malaysia to win back Lee, and made a joint statement apologizing to his wife and admitting his errors. Throughout the unfolding drama, however, Liddy remained strangely silent.
Pang declared his intent to officially sever relations with Liddy whilst paying her off with financial support. Since her father’s suicide Liddy has become even more evasive, however, and is rumoured to have hunkered down somewhere in the mainland to wait for the storm to pass.
