For 14 years a man from Hong Kong kept the dead bodies of his mistress and their two-year-old son hidden under the bed in his rented apartment in Shenzhen unnoticed, Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
The bodies were only found when the suspect, surnamed Jian, requested that his landlord send helpers to clean his two-bedroom apartment on Lianhua North Road in Buji during his absence. The helper was alerted to the bodies by a terrible smell coming from a bag underneath the bed. When she opened it, the decomposed bones of the woman and child were revealed.
Jian allegedly killed his second family in May 2000. At this time he was also faced with gambling debts which conflicted with the 2000 RMB per month it cost to cater his Shenzhen family. This, along with the responsibility to his family in Hong Kong (including two children), led him to kill his mistress and their child.
He reportedly strangled the mother and their child one afternoon while they were napping. After committing the murders he moved out of the apartment, stuffing the corpses into shipping crates to avoid raising suspicion with the home movers.
The mistress was never reported missing as she had apparently lost contact with her rural family members, and as rent was always paid on time it give little reason for the landlord to check his tenant.
