Summertime is the best season for lychees, and the first weeks of warm weather bring crowds of people to Shenzhen’s Lychee Park to pick from the many trees bearing ripe fruit. Residents and visitors spotted at the park on Tuesday afternoon, however, were described as gathering lychees from the trees in a less-than-wholesome manner. In fact, a post on Weibo reported it as downright “violent”.
In order to liberate the lychees, some visitors threw plastic bottles or slippers towards the trees to knock them from the branches. Some held the lychee branches and shook them off, while others climbed the tree and dropped them down below.
Netizens, as always, had a few things to say about the lychee massacre that ensued.
Weibo user 鬲虫奔向夏天 said: “Those visitors are there for free lychees. Do they act this way because they didn’t play enough games in their childhood? Did they not receive enough education in their teens? […] Please say sorry to the trees and donate more money to the tree planting festival next year. ”
“Why not cut down the trees and move them home? They can bring them back after eating up the lychee,” user 上山捉松鼠12345 jokingly suggested.
______________翼 said: “They are so happily picking lychees, but where is their face now?”
A Shenzhen netizen reluctantly agreed: “What’s the point of Lychee Park? We aren’t supposed to pick and eat the lychees when they’re ripe? Well, park management staff could arrange it in a better way at least. It might be dangerous for visitors climb up and down the lychee trees. Picking lychees like a monkey is not good either.”
