Previously we reported that baby pandas from the Giant Panda Protection and Research Centre in Sichuan would follow Paul the Octopus‘ footsteps foreseeing the results of this year’s World Cup matches. This author is sad to report that the plan has since been abandoned.
Yu Li, the Sichuan correspondent for Xinhua, was cited in an SCMP report as saying that “the State Forestry Bureau had finally scrapped the idea of the predictions,” adding, “I think they’re concerned that the pandas will be used as publicity stunt to entertain people.”
Using pandas to predict the World Cup outcomes is wrong, but it’s fine to exploit them in photo ops with has-been celebrities? Life is truly unfair.
