Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reboot raked in an impressive 10.9 million USD at China’s box office on Friday, making it the country’s biggest opening day of 2014 to date–eclipsing Hollywood films X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film seems to have prospered despite general complaints that Hollywood’s new version of its star is decidedly “too fat” (Japanese fans attributed the transformation to a steady American diet of pizza and soda). The film now boasts the biggest opening day of all time for a Warner Bros. title.
Godzilla has now earned north of $400 million worldwide, including $188.1 million to date in North America.
Insiders are expecting Godzilla to earn $68 million for the weekend, narrowly besting the $67.2 million debut of Days of Future Past and easily ahead of the $60.4 million opening of Amazing Spider-Man 2 earlier in the summer.
