In this seasons annual recruitment drive for the People’s Liberation Army, the requirements have become somewhat relaxed to allow the slightly shorter and slightly rounder man a chance at serving their country. No conscription poster necessary in this case, just the whiff of an increased entertainment budget should sway the less than slender serviceman.
As well as this, those whose teenage rebellion tattoo has gotten in the way of the joining the other good service men of China, may now have a chance at redemption as the military is intending of being more tolerant of these horrid things. It appears even if you’re blind or mentally unstable the Chinese military will take you in. Well, “less-than-ideal eyesight” at least will get you a place as a low ranker, and don’t worry about schizophrenia, you’ve still got a chance. Just as long as the numbers are going up, ey China?
Despite the lowering in standards, the PLA is still striving for a better educated military. Apparently if you’re short, fat, blind or a penny short of a pound there’s chance you’re more likely to be an intelligent recruit. Or perhaps the Chinese military is just reacting to the the fact that the future looks fat for China.
To try and attract these fine thinking men and women, the PLA will double its spend on “musical instruments, jukeboxes and other equipment to entertain soldiers”. See them run from their comfy, 10 year deep, sofa welts. “The new standard is to satisfy the spiritual and cultural needs of the soldiers, and to boost their cohesiveness and combat readiness” apparently.
The WSJ reported:
According to the new standards, China’s military will now require male recruits to be 160 centimeters (about 5-foot-2), down from 162 centimeters (5-foot-3). A similar two-centimeter reduction will apply to women, for a minimum 158 centimeters.
China’s shortest soldiers will still be taller than the shortest in the U.S. army, where the minimum height for male U.S. soldiers is 5 feet even (about 152 centimeters)
Despite the forgiving list of issues you can apply with this year it seems the worlds largest military may not be as liberal as it sounds. In the 2012 recruit, the PLA accepted only one of eight female applicants in Tianjin. So those who are thinking of biting the bullet and applying, better not be complacent.
Apparently as soldiers are growing wider they are also growing taller, as they cited a survey which found soldiers where getting too big for the three decade old tanks. Maybe that’s what next years incentive will be. Bigger tanks.
