The scenic Black Tiger Spring in Jinan, Shandong province has recently been turned into a public swimming pool by dozens of local residents swimming, diving, brushing their teeth and bathing there.
Around 70 visitors were photographed on June 15 donning bathing suits, swimming caps and goggles as they swam and dived into the famous spring. Innocent enough, until some swimmers toting their own oral care tools began brushing their teeth in the water. Not only that, some bathed in the spring and even (rather inexplicably) brought the water home in containers.
As the photos began to circulate online, netizens criticized the local residents for ‘losing their dignity’ and called the behavior ‘disgusting’. Some also questioned why there were no guards stopping the local residents from turning the scenic springs into a spectacle of inner-city YMCA-proportions.
The Black Tiger Spring is one of the four famous springs in town, known for its magnificent stream of spring water coming out from three carved stone tiger heads along the side.
The local government spoke up about the issue, agreeing that it was dangerous and that it jeopardized the integrity of the city when residents treated the spring as a public bathing place. More seriously, swimmers had actually violated laws surrounding the protection of the famous pool.
A few days ago, Jinan released “A letter to residents in the City of Spring” encouraging them to ‘love and protect’ the springs and rivers while enjoying them ‘civilly’.
