Trey Ratcliff, a keen photographer and self-confessed adventurer from New Zealand, ran into a spot of trouble in Beijing for attempting to take aerial shots of China’s Forbidden City using a “quadcopter”. We thank him nonetheless, because the results are incredible.
For those who don’t understand the significance of his feat (which, at the time, Ratcliff admits he didn’t), he explains in his blog that it’s “kind of like Luke Skywalker deciding to ride his landspeeder on the Death Star”. Even more simply, it’s basically like putting tomato sauce on chocolate cake. You just don’t do it.
Trey planned on constructing an artistic piece of Beijing from above but after getting the device confiscated, filming was cut short. The video below showcases the material he gathered before the legal dramas, however, and it’s pretty awesome.
