Guangxi’s annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival attracts plenty of dog lovers who come to protest the event. Most dog dealers would see this as an impediment to business, but with what can only be described as inventive cruelty, a local procurer of canine meat has concocted a new way to extort money from these good-hearted people as well: threatening to violently kill dogs unless they buy them from him for inflated prices.
A crowd of locals gathered around to enjoy the spectacle this Friday, laughing, cheering and applauding as the man swung the small dogs around by a metal clasp around their necks, calling out, “if you don’t buy it, I’ll crush it to death!” When a dog’s life was bought, the dealer proudly brandished the wad of bills for all to see. A local man was pictured trying to beat an older woman with tear-filled eyes as she begged them for mercy.
Discussions online roundly condemned the men involved as “dregs of humanity”, with many Chinese netizens lamenting the state of their country: “Every country has hoodlums,” wrote one, “but there’s no denying China has the most.” Another added, “I wish there were more good people in our country…”
