Attendees at the annual Yulin Summer Solstice Dog Meat Festival were apparently tickled to see a couple of foreigners supporting the event amid all its controversy, as the two were photographed walking through crowds of applauding people while leaving a restaurant that serves dog meat (although it’s unclear if they actually consumed canine).
The festival this year attracted an influx of activists and dog-lovers who arrived in Yulin, Guangxi to protest the festival and it seems to have had an impact. In past years, more than 10,000 dogs were estimated to have been slaughtered for the festival, but according to Beijing News, only some 2,000 canines were consumed at participating restaurants in the event this year.
Crowds of patrons to the festival were photographed on Friday laughing and cheering as a vendor swung a live dog around, taunting teary-eyed dog-lovers with proclamations like “if you don’t buy it, I’ll crush it to death!” One activist was reported to have spent up to 70,000 RMB to rescue 200 dogs from vendors trying to extort money from the animal lovers.
