Sam Sam and Hoi Hoi
With great sadness we relay the news that Macau’s five-year-old giant panda Sam Sam (Xin Xin in Mandarin), a gift from the mainland, died on Sunday evening due to kidney failure.
Citing the Macau Official Provisional Municipal Council, SCMP reported that the panda hadn’t shown symptoms of illness last month but was uncooperative during training.
The panda received week-long treatment after being diagnosed but her kidneys deteriorated over the last two weeks.
Sam Sam was born in 2007 in Chengdu, Sichuan province. She and another male panda, Hoi Hoi, were sent to Macau in 2010, where their names were chosen during local public poll.
Goodbye, Sam Sam. May you fall asleep and do adorable panda things on that great big tree in the sky.
