A Wuhan woman called the police to report that her boyfriend died, but became implicated when the forensic report revealed blowfish poison as the cause of death. However, she claimed that he died accidentally due to drinking a cocktail of yogurt, pufferfish toxin, and sleeping pills that she was going to use to off herself.
The 33-year-old woman, surnamed Xiao, studied briefly in Germany between 2008-2011, and had married once before. She met her boyfriend Liu, who was six years younger than her, in a software company, and they moved in together in last February. According to Xiao, she found out she was pregnant in early September, and her boyfriend was not happy about it. The two had several fights since then and Liu decided to move out of the house yet continued to maintain the relationship.
In early November, Xiao fell ill and her doctor said she would not be able to go through the full term and suggested an abortion. She claims that she felt devastated and came up with idea of suicide. She said, “If I died, he will be convicted by his own conscience.” So she bought the puffer fish poison which she heard is “the least painful way to die” for 5,000 RMB (US$ 805) online.
And the story gets weirder. On Nov. 11, Liu asked Xiao to give him a hot foot bath. Xiao said she left him alone for around 20 minutes to prepare for the foot bath and when she started to message his feet, Liu complained about dizziness and sleepiness. Xiao soon found out that he drank half of the poisoned yogurt she left in the refrigerator, so she drank the other half, because “she was extremely upset.” Both of them passed out, but Xiao woke up at around 11pm that night, before losing consciousness again after trying to dry her boyfriend’s feet. Xiao said she only discovered her that her boyfriend had died after she regained consciousness at noon the next day.
She did not report Liu’s death to the police for a week after. Instead, Xiao stayed by his body, put clothes on him and put lipstick on his mouth. She left a note to both of their parents and bought more poison to use for a second suicide attempt. She claimed that her cousin, who was visiting at the time, stopped her,
Police however, were not convinced by Xiao’s stories and decided to charge her for attempted murder on the grounds that she bought and mixed the puffer fish poison into yogurt, invited the boyfriend to her apartment and did not try to save him after realizing that he had been poisoned.
According to the report:
Before she turned herself in, Xiao also used the boyfriend’s phone to ask leave from his company, lied to his family about his health and sold the computer she used to purchase the poison. Police found a message she posted on the internet ask whether one should commit suicide or go to police after killing someone,
