Eleven people, including eight kindergarten students, were killed after an overloaded minivan fell into a pond on Thursday in a mountainous village near Changsha, the capital of Hunan province.
Rescuers confirmed early this morning that the crash took place around 5:00 p.m. yesterday as the vehicle was carrying the children home from their kindergarten in the city of Xiangtan. Eight students, two teachers and the driver were onboard when it plunged into the reservoir, Xinhua reports.
Because the scene was remote, the accident was not immediately discovered. The seven-seat minivan was pulled out of the water around 3:00 a.m. on Friday with the bodies of the children and the driver inside. The bodies of the two teachers were found later.
According to local media, the van had been traveling on a narrow road with no barrier. Residents said that “it was commonplace for the kindergarten vehicle to overload”.
