A man from Liaoning was rescued at Mount Taishan after he’d fallen off a cliff and lived in the wild alone for 13 days with only insects and grass as food.
The 43-year-old man, surnamed Hong, was from Dalian in Liaoning. He went hiking alone at Mount Taishan on June 27 after arguing with his family. He reportedly fell off the cliff while walking through a lane and after sinking into a coma for three days, he woke up from the pain caused by his right leg’s bone fracture to find that his mobile phone, bank card and money had all disappeared.
Hong used all of his effort to crawl under a tree as to avoid sun exposure. He drank a bottle of water and the last bit of food left in his backpack to retain energy, and when his pain begin to let up, he crawled downward. In these days, he reportedly fed himself with ants, cockroaches, earthworms, mosquitoes and so on. To avoid dehydration, he chewed on grass to stimulate the saliva secretion.
He was found on Wednesday morning by the forest rangers while they were making rounds on the mountain. He was then sent to the hospital and diagnosed with bone fractures in his right ankle, ribs and lower backbone. His weight went from 75 kg to 60 kg in 13 days.
Seeing his father and wife, Hong cried and said: “In these 13 days, all my experiences in these 43 years played like a movie in my mind. I have found that there are many regretful things in my life, and I owe my family a lot.”
Hong was then sent back to Dalian with his family for medical treatment.
