A 27-year-old doctor in Jining city, Shandong province chose to turn down the well-paid jobs he was offered after his graduation so that he could return to his hometown to become a farmer.
The man’s story was exposed after he and his friend entered a contest on a local TV station to win a reward of 50,000 RMB. He surprised the hosts when he told them that he’d hoped they could use the money to buy more than one thousand packs of chemical fertilizer, according to Qilu news reports.
After the doctor, named Wang Chong, graduated from the Chemical Engineering Institute at Harbin Institute of Technology, he sat for a “Village Official” exam and decided that he wanted to go back to his hometown as a farmer. The decision enraged his mother, and his friends and relatives tried in vain to persuade him to give up his new “dream”. They believed his mind had been warped from over 20 years of school.
In Wang’s opinion, working in the countryside would be very prosperous. He and his friend rented two acres of land to plant strawberries.
Wang’s wife was likewise working for her doctorate degree in the same university. After her graduation, she said she’d probably return to work with Wang.
In the wake of graduation season, Wang’s story shocked netizens.
“Being a graduate myself, my heart suddenly dropped when I heard this story,” web user Hu Xiaoxia said.
“Is it so difficult to hunt a job now? If so, I should learn a skill from a technical school.” user Big Face added.
User Little Q applauded Wang’s courage, “I think he’s awesome! It will be really fantastic if he could be as successful as Yuan Longping (a famous agricultural expert). I support him! ”
