As thousands of visitors flow in and out of Beijing’s landmarks during the peak tourism season, some opportunists decided to cash in, including these six “bronze” street performers who were hauled off by cops for extorting money from tourists after they’d ask to take a picture with them.
According to visitors, the street performers wandered around with friendly faces and invited tourists to take photos with them. After posing for pictures, they asked for money (ranging from 20 yuan to 100 yuan) aggressively, even threatenings the tourists if they refused to cough up cash.
Around 30 law enforcement officials investigated the case and finally captured the six street performers, handing them a fine of 1400 yuan for working without a license. They also confiscated the nine sets of “bronze” costumes to ensure that they’d never been seen on the streets of Beijing ever again.
