California Senator Ted Lieu is urging Fox News host Bob Beckel to resign after a series of remarks he spewed out on air, including referring to Chinese people as “Chinamen” and the “single biggest threat to the national security of the US.”
Senator Lieu called for Beckel’s resignation after the host sputtered out the comments on a broadcast of “The Five” last Thursday.
“The Chinese are the single biggest threat to the national security of the U.S. They have been, they will be and they can wait, they’re very patient. Do you know what we just did? As usual, we bring them over here and we teach a bunch of Chinamen – er, Chinese people – how to do computers and then they go back to China and hack into us.”
Beckel was referencing a New York Times article published days ago that described how Chinese hackers in March broke into the computer networks of US government agencies and accessed data from tens of thousands of federal employees who applied for top-secret security services.
Beckel’s been under fire in the past for his offensive comments covering all from Karl Marx to San Francisco nudists.
Last year he endured some public flogging for anti-Muslim remarks he made on the show. “If it were up to me, I would not have another mosque built in this country until we got it worked out who was not a terrorist,” he said.
The same year, Beckel said on “The Five” that his eyes “eyes blew up” when he’d gone swimming and “it made me look Oriental.”
Senator Lieu, a Chinese-American, called Beckel’s “extreme xenophobic” words “just racist and stupid”.
“America is great because anyone can be an American. Our country is the strongest in the world because of our diversity,” he was quoted as saying. “Unfortunately, Fox News host Bob Beckel does not understand what it means to be an American.”
