Sixteen Shanxi junior secondary school students diagnosed with HIV or AIDS succeeded in their high school entrance exams to continue their studies, earning them a letter of encouragement from China’s first lady, Peng Liyuan.
The students are from the Lin Fen Red Ribbon School in Shanxi, the only school providing education and medical treatment to children suffering with HIV or AIDS in China since December 2011. Last month, the16 students became the first group of students in their school to participate in zhongkao, China’s high school entrance exam. They then successfully passed the exam and were accepted by the Linfen No.3 Middle School.
As a way to help encourage children suffering with HIV or AIDS, Pu Cunxin, the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS and a famous Chinese actor, came to Red Ribbon School to present the certificates of graduation to students.
Peng Liyuan, Chinese First Lady and WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, also wrote a letter encouraging these children. Peng penned: “Although disease has brought you misfortunes, you all are blessed in the meantime. It’s because there are many people in society concerned and helping you all. We should always be thankful, face our life optimistically, face the reality, embrace the future, pursue your dreams bravely and work hard to achieve them.”
