Two people fell off the subway platform into the rail ditch of Line 2 in Beijing this morning within the time span of less than a half an hour, CRIEnglish reports.
Beijing’s metro management authorities said that one woman had jumped in an apparent suicide attempt and was killed at the Guloudajie Station. The other woman fainted and fell from the platform. She managed to climb out by herself at the Xuanwumen station and was unharmed.
This is the seventh case of its kind to occur on Line 1 and Line 2 alone in the first half of 2014, according to local reports, and the incidents have once again roused residents’ demands for metro authorities to install safety screen doors on the two old subway lines.
Management authorities said that the project would be complicated because the two lines are among the most busy in the city and run almost 24/7. Authorities drew out plans for installations on Line 1 last April and expect work to be finished by 2016, while Line 2 has yet to be approved for the project.
In June, a young pregnant woman fell onto the subway tracks in Beijing just as a train was approaching, but was saved when the driver managed to slam on the brakes and roll to a stop one meter away from the fallen woman.
