Outrage shook Hainan after it was revealed that 290 boxes of “moldy bread” had been sent to typhoon victims. The blunder led Miao Jianzhong, Head of the Hainan Provincial Department Of Civil Affairs, to apologize yesterday at a press conference on protection and rescue against the super typhoon Rammasun, Tencent News reports.
According to the report, Miao took full responsibility for the faulty aid packages, which are currently being investigated. The Director of Disaster Assistance has been relieved of her duties.
The musty breads were allegedly provided by Fujian Jin Wang Da Food Limited. One Hainan citizen posted photos on Weibo a few days ago showing the moldy bread her family received, triggering hot debates concerning the quality of the food grants.
The department purchased them from Hainan Huajian Trade Limited. They were produced in Zhejiang, Guangdong and Kaiping, between June 4 and July 12, and were technically not expired.
