The world’s worst thief resold over 30,000 bottles of herbal tea stolen form a warehouse in order to earn around 100 RMB in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province.
The suspect, a warehouse patrolman surnamed Zhang, discovered storage of over 2,000 boxes of herbal tea (more than 30,000 bottles in total) in March, and that’s when he schemed up his bright scheme.
He called up three waste pickers to come over and collect the bottles. After spending 12 hours draining the herbal tea from inside the bottles, Zhang resold the empties and the cardboard boxes to collectors, gaining a profit of 115 RMB.
The 30,000 bottles of herbal tea were in fact worth 170,000 RMB.
After the owner of the herbal tea, a man surnamed Liang, discovered the disappearance on March 16, he called the police. They arrived at the scene and sniffed out a “sweet aroma” at the warehouse gate along with piles of bottle caps on the floor. The officers arrested Zhang at the scene.
The suspect is now being held in criminal detention. The three waste pickers, who were not aware of the illicit source of the bottles, were released sans legal responsibilities.
