Golden cicadas, which are believed to have a high nutritional and medicinal value, have become an item of demand recently in Henan, Hebei, Shandong, Anhui and other provinces. Generally speaking, the beginning of May through June is the incubation period for the cicadas.
Since July, elderly people and children in Linyi, Shanxi have been spending their nights at this 80-acre area where fruit farmers plant apple trees. Equipped with flashlights, they manage to find buckets full of golden cicadas.
The demand for cicadas has grown steadily over the past six years, according to those who purchase the critters. All the cicadas collected in the evening are sold to Shandong restaurants and due to rising prices, some farmers can sell their cicadas for up to 48 yuan per jin (0.5 kilo), sometimes making up to 1000 yuan per night.
