Many childless couples are sparing no expense in seeking surrogate mothers. Recently, reporters from Jingchu Daily interviewed several couples who, after losing children or discovering they couldn’t conceive them, turned to a clandestine ‘womb-rental service’ to provide them with their ‘pride and joy’.
Fifty-year-old Li Xiaofeng (pseudonym) is a case in point. Before last Spring Festival, Li’ was promoted as the senior executive in his company and his annual salary was upped to 300,000 RMB. His wife, Xia Wenna was also promoted at her school, and their only daughter became a gaokao champion in Sichuan, before being admitted to a top university
However, their lives took a tragic turn when their daughter fell into a pond and died during a vacation.
After grieving, Li and wife were introduced to an underground surrogate company in hopes of getting a new child. Due to his wife’s feeble physical and mental conditions, the couple was advised to find a surrogate mother. The couple decided to quit their jobs and rent a house for the surrogate mother.
The surrogate mother gave birth to a pair of boy-girl twins for the couple. After they went through a DNA test based on the contract, the couple took their new babies and happily headed back to Sichuan.
According to Li, they spent almost one million RMB on the service. However, he thought it was worthwhile.
Yubo and Guoqiong (pseudonym) were the second case. The couple postponed their family planning time and time again as they put their business in the first place and tried hard to save more money. When the couple was close to 40 years old, they decided to sell their business and have a baby.
Unfortunately, the wife, Guoqiong was told by the doctor that it was unlikely that she would be able to conceive a child naturally. She sought help from an underground surrogate company,.
The first surrogate mother failed to carry the baby for more than three months. The couple then found a second surrogate mother. Because of the first miscarriage, the couple took even more care of this mother like two dedicated nannies. Their son was born in April.
Liu Jinyuan (pseudonym) used to have a happy family until her 31-year-old son died in a car accident. Soon after that, her daughter-in-law and granddaughter left the family.
Liu learned about surrogacy from a QQ group in March. In order to have a child to take care of them in their old age, they agreed to have their second child with the assistance of a surrogate mother. She “borrowed” another woman’s ovum and her own husband’s sperm and had it implanted into her own womb, which cost her 150,000 RMB.
If things go smoothly, Liu will have their new baby in seven months. She’s knitting sweaters for the coming baby these days.
