Photos of an incredibly resilient brick pagoda teetering precariously on a mound of dirt in Shanxi have gone viral online, as users affectionately dubbed the structure the “strong-willed pagoda”.
The five-story brick pagoda was spotted standing alone on a mound in a village in Qi County, Shanxi Province. This “Wenfeng Pagoda” (文峰塔) stands five meters tall atop an earth base around eight meters high.
The “strong-willed pagoda” is sadly on the verge collapse due to its unstable pillars, and villagers say each day might be the pagoda’s last.
After the photos of the structure began circulating online, netizens urged authorities to take immediate action to preserve the fragile heritage site.
According to the county’s heritage conservation team, the pagoda was a monument from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It could cost over a million yuan for maintenance and renovation.
