Several photos of an elderly woman cutting her toenails on a bus in Yiyang, Hunan Province went viral on an online forum yesterday, sparking discussion among netizens who have called on citizens to stop “uncivilized” behavior when they witness it on public transportation.
The elderly woman was spotted sitting on the bus with her foot resting on the seat before pulling out a large pair of red nail clippers. Witnesses noted that she began cutting her toe nails ‘with clenched teeth’, embarrassing other passengers.
The witness who took the photos claimed that toenail clippings were landing on his body, and because no passengers dared to ask the woman to stop, all he could do was snap pictures of the scene and post them online to remind people to behave themselves on the bus.
“I felt embarrassed telling her to stop face-to-face,” the witness admitted.
Often times, witnesses to such events fail to say anything to passengers at the time, but later post photos of misconduct online to vent.
Netizens said passengers should begin stepping up and stopping such “uncivilized” behavior from happening, while further urging passengers to behave themselves on public transportation.
Bus drivers cited in the rednet.com report said that it was common to see passengers smoking, polishing their shoes and bringing their pets onboard buses.
The driver added that the situation has improved as the city has become more developed.
