A woman in Wuhan, Hubei province showed up at the city’s Caicheng Square on Thursday, just a few days ahead of Chinese Valentine’s Day, carrying a bouquet of flowers as part of an elaborately planned proposal to her boyfriend. The boyfriend, however, was nowhere to be seen, as he’d sent his friend to “pass on” his acceptance of the marriage proposal.
The 22-year-old woman, surnamed Wu, set out to the decorated square on Thursday and played a recording of her proposal monologue as romantic music blared in the background.
“It’s so fortunate for me to have met you. I will only marry you! I hope we can celebrate Chinese Valentine’s Day together every year. Let’s be each other’s lover, share our life and never part…” the recording said.
“Xiao [her boyfriend’s name], I want to have a baby with you,” she said in the monologue. Onlookers gathered around quickly whipped out their smart phones to capture the romantic moment.
Disappointingly, her boyfriend didn’t stick around to receive the proposal. Instead, another man showed up 20 minutes later to accept it on the man’s behalf.
He explained to reporters that Xiao was so shy and introverted that he felt frightened by her public proposal and had to “run away” when he saw what was happening.
“He wanted me to tell her that he accepted the proposal and he asked me to escort her to join him,” the man added.
Wu said she and her boyfriend both were in love with each other. “He wouldn’t take the initiative to propose, so I did,” the bride-to-be said, grinning.
Still a better turnout than this proposal in Xiamen.
