Burgers with French characteristics: With three restaurants and counting within a 30-meter strip on Huaihai Middle Road, it’s safe to say that Frenchman Michael Wendling, has staked out his piece of the French concession. His latest concept, CU2+ is fittingly a ‘francophized’ burger joint serving burgers with a French makeover – ie. the “Mike on the Bike” with beef, truffle mayo, ognon confit, romaine lettuce, jus de viande, and brie cheese on brioche (108RMB). Each burger comes with a choice of regular fries with chili mayo (18RMB) or truffle fries with truffle mayo (28RMB). Wendling’s goal was to focus as much on the burger’s individual ingredients as the sum of its parts. As a result, the components are so mouth-watering they could be served piece-meal. We especially like the (relatively) locavore touch of Hainan chicken in their chicken burger and the Dongbei black pig in their pork burger. Oh, and unlike 90% of Shangtown’s burger haunts, “medium rare” means “medium rare” with a bloody, cherry-cola-colored core.

Oh My Kebab: Meat-on-stick specialist Oh My Kebab has demonstrated that it’s “doner” has quite impressive reach as it’s unveiled a new location on Hengshan Road in addition to its flagship on Yongkang Road. Looks like it’s found it’s niche providing high-octane shawarma to expat bar-hoppers.
