A handicapped girl from Zhangzhou city, Fujiang province who scored 549 in the gaokao has been denied by the university she applied to because “she’d failed to meet the physical fitness test,” CCTV News reports.
The student, Liu Wanling said she’d received a phone call from Jiangxia College’s Admission Office asking her if she was willing to swap over to another comparatively less popular major. She agreed but was still turned down by the school.
When reporters interviewed the admission office staff, they explained that according to the regulations of the National Educational Department, the Health Department, and the China Disabled People Union, it was within their legal right to revoke admission. At first they attached importance to Liu Wanling’s special health condition, but after “serious” evaluation and consideration, they said they had to revoke it
Liu’s case has stirred up a firestorm of anger from netizens. “China is an abyss that kills people’s hope. Not a little hope is given to its people,” Web user 膝盖都是茧 wrote.
“This is very ridiculous. Obviously, it’s discrimination against disabled people. The admission office people are brainless! “扬帆乘风 said angrily.
“I’ve been thinking a lot on this issue. I feel really bad about it. It’s so unfair. But kid, jiayou. I wish you good luck!” hxr52 commented.
