An 88-year-old woman was finally rescued after she spent 50 hours trapped underground, having been buried by rubble caused by the Yunnan earthquake. According to the medical staff, she is currently in stable condition.
On August 5, a Chengdu military team discovered the woman, surnamed Xiong, in the rubble. Soldiers were alerted of her presence when by her feeble cries.
Medical staff from the Zhaotong City Chinese Hospital come to the rescue.
Rescuers dig pits and remove debris.
Hours later, the rescuers confirm Xiong’s location and call out to her “Auntie, can you see the light? Please stay strong and we will save you,” said a rescuer. “Yes, can see the light, ” responded by the granny. The staff carve out an escape route.
Rescuers cut a 4-metre square hole so they can send milk and congee to Xiong.
Xiong is pulled from the wreckage and hospitalized.
