New and noteworthy in the mobile app space: IndulgeSmart, an application that aims to help Shanghai expats discover their next favorite restaurant, “where you are, where you want it”.
Recently launched by an 8-person startup, the app offers the usual location- and cuisine-based search of restaurants, in your neighborhood and across the city. Well, don’t we already have apps for that, you ask. Where this application aims to set itself apart from the rest of the pack, we’re told by developers, is that the more you use it, the more it will be able to “understand” you so it can deliver you new recommendations based on your individual tastes and dining history.
We haven’t given the app enough of a run to figure out if it’s as intelligent as they say it is, but at first blush, it does look sleekly and intuitively designed, despite the intermittent scrolling issues we seem to be having on our Xiaomi. It also appears to have attracted a small herd of dedicated, hardcore foodies who have been actively using the app to rate, review and share restaurants in the weeks following their beta launch.
Founder Stone Shi tells Shanghaiist of his frustration in finding and reserving tables at Shanghai’s restaurants when he moved here from the US in the summer of 2010. Two years later, he decided to take things into his own hands by quitting his job and setting out to solve this problem.
