A 71-year-old man living by himself in Chongqing’s Yuzhong district reportedly called the police 1,483 times over the past year, said officers, who believe that he was often drunk and desperate to have a conversation.
“He called police after forgetting his keys on July 23. I contacted his ex-wife and had her go to his home,” an officer, surnamed Xi, told Chongqing Business Daily. The officer added that the elderly man, surnamed Zhao, sounded drunk.
Police said that after the initial conversation, Zhao began dialing up the Daping Police Station multiple times per day, once calling 29 times in a single week.
“He said he was lonely and wanted to talk after doing some drinking. We understand him and would always go out to check on him, but he keeps calling,” Xi said in the report.
Zhao and his ex-wife have been separated for over 20 years, and his daughters live in Beijing, according to the report. Zhao refuses to move into a nursing home because of the stringent no-drinking policies and high cost.
