Zhou Jie, a female artist from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, took performance art to a whole new level when she slept naked on a wire bed for 36 days straight, according to Oriental Daily.
‘Woman’ on wire
The exhibition ran from August 9 to September 13, during which Zhou dined, washed, used her phone and slept on the wire bed. On the first day of the public display, she slept naked with her boyfriend sitting beside her. He reportedly understood her work, and said, “genuine people would not make irresponsible comments.” If he slept with her in the bed, would it be considered “wire tapping?”
Zhou stated she was not certain about the message she was trying to convey, but found the pursuit necessary anyway. She hoped to disclose her daily routine and said, “I can do nude sleeping, clothes wearing without any preset. This is life.”
Zhou did not intend it as a publicity stunt. She just wanted to show the powerful relationship between nude sleeping and the bed. She denied any allegations of it being self-mutilation as performance art, adding “I won’t allow myself to be badly mutilated.”
