A 27-year-old woman, surnamed Zhang, who had just given birth, was found dead on an operation table at Hunan’s Xiangtan Maternal and Child Health Hospital. Worst of all, medical staff were nowhere to be found, Apple Daily reports.
Zhang’s husband, surnamed Liu, found his wife lying dead on the operation bed without any medical staff present, save for a stranger eating a coconut and smoking (Hunan’s finest everyone!). Naturally, he demanded an explanation from hospital staff.
Liu recalled that his wife had arrived the hospital on August 10. She had gone into labor a day before. The doctor proposed a c-section because the baby was overweight, but the couple declined. Upon giving birth, Zhang suffered from excessive bleeding. Liu signed an agreement was asked to purchase hemostatic agents. Zhang’s uterus was removed after 5 hours, but it was not enough to save her, and she passed away that night.
Upon hearing the news, Liu frantically knocked on the door of her operation room but was stopped by the acting president of the hospital. Later that night, he inquired about her again, but received no reply. Finally, he charged into the room, and found Zhang dead on the table.
An investigation by the provincial government determined that Zhang had died of an amniotic fluid embolism. Fortunately, the baby survived and is in stable condition.
The family and the hospital are currently negotiating compensation.
