A bus in Yantai, Shandong province burst into flames on Wednesday, resulting in one death and 19 injuries. Police identified the case as an act of arson and have identified a man in his 50s as the suspect, Oriental Daily reports.
The fire was immediately put out yet the bus was left with just its frame. The blaze killed one women and 19 other passengers were hurt.
According to a passenger sitting in the back, the front of the bus ignited first, and several passengers jumped out from the windows.
“I heard that an elderly ran away with an oil can,” said the passenger.
Another witness confirmed the bus suddenly burst into flames and was burned down to only its frame in a few minutes.
This case marks at least the fourth incident this summer involving acts of arson on buses in China. Most recently, in June, a 25-year-old man set fire to a bus in Guangzhou, killing two people, because he was “angry over gambling losses“.
