Doctors at a hospital in Shanghai performed a five-hour operation removing 86 pellets from an eight-year-old Anhui boy’s face last night after he accidentally shot himself while playing with his parents’ hunting gun.
The boy was rushed to a hospital in Hefei, Anhui’s capital city, on Tuesday, but was transferred to Shanghai No. 9 People’s Hospital yesterday in order to receive better care, Shanghai Daily reports.
Doctors spent five hours removing the pellets and dealing with his broken alveolar bones, which contain the sockets for the teeth. He’s now in stable condition in the intensive care unit but will require follow-up treatment.
Dr. Xie Ting of Shanghai No. 9 People’s Hospital said in a post on his microblog that the parents didn’t know what type of gun the boy was playing with but assumed it was a homemade shotgun often used by farmers for rabbit-hunting.
