A 70-year-old woman in Jinjiang, Fujian province provides yet another valuable lesson as to why people should keep their life savings in banks and not in closets, sheds, or mattresses.
The woman, surnamed Cai, saw on Tuesday that a stack of cash she’d been saving in her closet for over eight years had been eaten by termites. The savings were worth around 10,000 yuan, she said.
The woman’s family collected 5,900 yuan in chewed-up banknotes and took them to two local banks, where employees were able to verify and exchange a miserable total of 1,950 yuan.
Even worse, if bank officials reject any incomplete notes, Cai could be asked to return some of that money.
