Last week a foreigner on a bus in Chengdu managed to break about all the rules you can on a city bus while still keeping your clothes on. Sichuan News talked to the bus driver and got the lowdown on this menace to public transportation.
First, the man attempted the oldest trick in the book by depositing two mao coins instead of the two-yuan bus fare. The seasoned bus driver, Yang Tao, clearly caught on the ruse and told the man to pay the full fare, but the foreigner ting bu dong‘ed his way out of the situation.
Later in the ride, the offending character found that he had missed his stop and confronted Yang to stop the bus so he could get off. Yang refused, and used his limited English to say “next.”
But this solution didn’t work for the passenger, and he started pressing buttons on the bus console and even went for the steering wheel. Yang held on and another passenger helped get the man calmed down until the bus arrived at its stop.
Upon stopping, the foreigner delivered his coup de grace, clocking Yang in the head as he got off the bus.
The whole experience understandably left Yang with a sour taste in his mouth.
“He was really impolite and didn’t care about safety. In the end, he even hit my head. It didn’t hurt, but it was a little insulting.”
No word yet on whether these two guys get together on the weekends to talk about how bus drivers are such assholes. But probably.
