Police in Wuhan, Hubei province on Tuesday caught a thief who stole over 1,600 lottery tickets before the fellow even got the chance to scratch them off. Waah.
Surveillance footage from a lottery stall in the city showed the 18-year-old suspect, surnamed Tan, run off with 1,632 lottery tickets worth almost 16,000 yuan late Monday.
Police arrested Tan at his home on Tuesday after finding the tickets stashed under his bed, the Global Times reports, citing Chutian Metropolis Daily. Tan said that he dreamed of making some easy renminbi and he planned on scratching off each ticket one by one.
“I just want to have money to burn. I dream of being a jackpot winner. If I purchased all the tickets from the stall, I would definitely win 5 million yuan,” he said.
“But the cops shattered my unfinished dream.”
Further crushing any smidgeon of hope left, police explained that stolen lottery tickets are immediately blacklisted and anyone who tries to cash them in will be directed to the authorities.
We’ll never know if a winning ticket was among the pile.
