Two teenagers caught stealing ducks in a Guangxi village received physical punishment handed out by local residents, who forced the boys to kneel down with the ducks in their mouths to repent for their crime, according to Net Ease Moeny.
Upon discovering what the thieves had done, a group of villagers chose not to call the cops, but to penalize the boys themselves. First, they forced the teens, both around 14 years old, to publicly apologize by kneeling down on the road with the ducks dangling from their mouths.
One especially angry villager tied up the legs of two more ducks for each boy and hung them around their necks. In a humiliating display, both teens carried three ducks while kneeling down on the road.
Villagers described the boys as being lazy, only spending their time drinking and smoking. They claimed the teens would often steal to support their habits.
Photos of the villagers carrying out the rather medieval form of punishment circulated on Chinese social media, with users expressing varying views on the case. Many netizens agreed that the punishment should’ve be executed through legal procedures. Others said that while it was illegal for the residents to carry out physical punishment, it would set an example for others in the village.
Police reminded the public that anyone caught committing a crime should be sent to authorities, and no one else has the legal power to punish suspects physically. Those who gathered to penalize the suspects would hold legal responsibility and face related charges.
