A school with only one teacher and one student began class yesterday, the first of what will presumably a very lonely academic year, in the Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Hubei province.
Liu Xinyi, a six-year-old girl, is the one and only newcomer to the school. The admission rate has been steadily declining as families have moved to other cities for work opportunities. Since 2008, the school intake has been no more than 10 students each year.
The 53-year-old teacher, Xie Sihui, has served in the education industry for 36 years. He’s taken sole responsibility of teaching in the school since 2008, and still insists on doing so, despite his very, very small class.
The one-on-one teaching style will certainly benefit the girl’s learning in the long-run.
Luckily most six-year-olds are naively exempt from the awkwardness that comes from having to hang out with your teacher during lunch.
Xie even sends the girl back home.
