A university in Xi’an has issued a new regulation on the first day of school calling for teachers and students to turn off their phones or surrender them in a provided storage bag before entering the classroom, according to Tencent News.
The regulation aims to raise students’ phone-awareness and attempts to ween them off of their phone dependency .
The school has made 200 storage bags available in for the school’s classrooms, and it looks like students are just racing to relinquish their precious mobiles.
Psychiatrists in Asia are pushing to authorities to formally recognize addiction to the internet and smartphones as a disorder, according to SCMP.
Trisha Lin, an assistant professor in Communications at the Nanyang Technology, said that digital addiction can be defined by various symptoms including the inability to control use, phone-separation anxiety, and a loss in productivity in studies or work.
