Residents in Futian District, Shenzhen have laid white and yellow chrysanthemums in mourning and in protest to news that the popular Lianhuashan community sports park will soon be demolished to make way for a shopping mall.
This past Sunday, hundreds of protestors and community members gathered outside the Lianhuashan football pitches as the local sports teams played their very last game. The football fields had been regularly used by over 300 teams.
Residents who came to take pictures and lay white and yellow chrysanthemums in mourning of the valuable green space expressed their dissatisfaction with the demolition plans by hanging banners with slogans that read “We oppose,” “Spare the football pitches for the children,” and even “Farewell forever our Lianhuashan football fields.”
Last Friday, a grassroots effort circulated on Weibo and WeChat asking all sports fans and community members to come out to pay their last respects to sports fields. The positive turnout mirrors the results of a poll that showed that 94% of the 27,000 people polled opposed the demolition.
