A total of 12 people accused of growing and selling around 14,000 kilos of toxic bean sprouts were sentenced to prison on Wednesday at a Guangdong court. We suspect they’ll be telling fellow prison inmates a slightly less lame story.
The Guangzhou Haizhu Court sentenced bean sprout gang leader Pan Mian to four years in jail with a 50,000 yuan fine. The other two members were handed two to four year sentences, according to CRIEnglish.
The court said that Pan and company had been using growth hormone, among other illegal additives, in their sprouts and selling them without certification since 2011. Around three tons of toxic bean sprout products were sold to the wholesale market each day.
At the end of last year, raids on three underground workshops in Tianjin found growth stimulants, antibiotics, bleaching powers and preservatives being used to whiten bean sprouts and to keep them fresh-looking.
Shen Zhaohui, an official WITH THE national bean sprouts industry association, said that commonly used agents like AB powder pose risks of causing early puberty, menstrual cycle changes and possibly cancer.
