A barge pilot was decapitated while passing under a bridge after water levels had risen in the Shihe River of Haining, Zhejiang province.
According to witness accounts, the 300-ton capacity barge was moving quickly across the water when the pilot, surnamed Yuan, struck his head on the Xinqiao Bridge. The vessel continued down the river before drifting to a stop, at which point, Yuan was still propped up in the driver’s seat without a head.
“My husband sells fruit on the river bank and he witnessed the whole accident,” a local resident told reporters. “The ship was heading fast but the water had risen.”
“Although the water was higher, the pilot still would have made it if he had slowed down and lowered his head,” another resident said.
